Oh, d*mn-- I know you just didn't...Thanks for sending me the link to this topic, Jenny. This is outrageous.

Where to start?

First of all,
Quote:
While you talk about your lovely "Extra Curricular Activity" you still dont show how it is a sport!
Big mistake. Before, this was just a debate. But with your nice sarcasm and ignorance, you've done gotten on my bad side.

Quote:
eh.. no band isnt a sport... lol i play the trumpet myself.. and yeah.. i really dont think it takes alot of... exercising.. or useage of muscles... cept for ur arms.. and a diaphram.. lol
Well, then you or your band must not be very good.

Quote:
What you do is band is you perform and entertain the crowd at half time during the football games.
Yeah? Well, last time I checked, people watch football for entertainment as well. So what if they don't look at it as entertainment? Band people don't either.

Quote:
You have a class that you learn all of this in.
*snorts*
Are you freakin' serious? Class? Bull crap! We just polish things up in class. At my school, we rehearsed as much as the football team, and band camp was probably more intense than their rehearsals. Plus, you have to practice, practice, and practice all on your own personal time! And take private lessons if you want to really succeed.

Quote:
So not only is band considered an Academic Study, but it is also just considered an extra curricular activity that you do for fun.
Really? Where did you get these facts to make this assumption? Let's just say what you said makes sense; it would then contradict all of your comments. Football is just for fun, yeah? Wait, no-- some people do it as a career because football is their life, right? What makes that so different from band, eh? Also, if band is considered only an extra curricular activity, what does that make football? School isn't about football; and since it isn't, that makes it extra curricular. So, if something that's extra curricular isn't a sport, football isn't just as much as band isn't.

Quote:
Thats why you can play other actual sports while your in band and in not be such a big deal!
Really? I know several people who have tried and it is so hard for them. The rehearsal times always clash because guess what? We practice a lot, just as much as the sports teams do. It's also hard because-- at least in a good band-- each member is expected to always be focused and to have practiced on their own time. People who participate in other sports find it difficult to do just that.

Quote:
I understand that you do go out and do competitions and which down here they are awesome, but thats just you working over time to see if what your band director did was worth it and if you are actually good or not.
Seriously now, where did this comment come from? You've obviously never been in band, so you have no right to make that judgement. That isn't even what competitions are about but I wouldn't expect you to know that. You're just like everybody else-- you'll form opinions about matters you don't even know anything about. Next time you bring a debate such as this up, at least know your facts or expect many more comments like this one.

Man, I am so worked up now.... :grrr:

band .. well i'm assuming everyone is talking about marching band. because at my school we have a marching band and symphonic band.

i would not consider band as a sport in the traditional sense, but dont get me wrong. i'm in marching band. its not easy, by ANY means. you constantly get yelled at, your feet blister, your legs ache, you feel like screaming but you cant, and if you make one little mistake its there for everyone to point and laugh at. some people might think its easy .. someone once asked me why everyone says band is so hard.

Quote:
you just walk around in a block and play music right?
WRONG. we do NOT simply walk around in a block and play music. theres so much technique involved in it. all it takes is one person to screw everything up. there are no "alternates" so everyone MUST do their part. field show is especially tiring because you have to march on the football field so much, and if the director doesnt like it, you have to do the same sets over and over and over .. on top of all of this, you have to memorize your music perfectly, and play it at the same quality as someone sitting in a nice air conditioned room.

so what i'm saying is, although i dont consider band a "sport," i'm not saying that they're not equal. of course band is just as tiring as a sport. but i just consider them in different categories. band is band, and sports are sports.

i dream of a place where paper birds could fly,
and fragile hearts would tell no lies.

Agreed, but most people don't realize that.

If I had time, I'd write out directions on how to march all types of steps, I'd scan a drill sheet, and so on. I might do it later, though. Y'know, speaking of-- once I had my drill sheets in my binder and they fell out in class. A football player picked it up, glanced at them, and then asked. "What is that?!" I answered, and when he was confused, I explained. He asked how to use them, and he was bewildered. And then he said, "Wow. I didn't know you guys did so much. We always thought you just randomly walked around the field blowing into horns. I really respect that you guys work so hard....we never knew..."

First of all:

Quote:
Sport: 1. a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively
Knowing the definition of a sport then, we can then review marching band.

A. It is a physical activity, you march (which isn't as easy as it sounds), sometimes run. Additionally, you are can be carrying a 20 pound instrument around you. Not to mention the sit ups, laps, pull ups, and exercise we do as well.
B. It has rules: You have to dig and roll, not being able to make your body bounce, but "glide" through" to be able to play while in motion. You have to follow the drill, and apply more rules assigned at the competition
C. You can compete with other schools.
Very true.

Quote:
if you can get a varsity letter for golf or rifle, and they consider them "sports" then band is def. a sport. if cheerleading is a sport, then so is band.

i'd like to see you try and glide across the field, playing a 20 lb instrument after the football team has dug it all up...
Exactly. I'm not in band, I'm in orchestra and memorizing music is hard enough, but having to do all that while carrying a huge instrument around for I don't know how long, now that's got to be tough. Band requires skill, physical abilities, and more. It doesn't seem like a sport, but I consider it one when you're talking about something like a marching band. I tried carrying my friend's instrument from band, and wow it was heavy. He's pretty strong though so he could handle it but for some it could be a huge hassle. To those who don't think it's a sport, look at what sociallydsoryntd said. Now that's in depth.

Just because you have sheets and stuff showing you were to go doesn't make it a sport!

alright.. ignorant comment out of the way

Band "geeks" work harder than anybody on a sport than I know! One of my best friends is part of the band *he's the best trumpet player at our school i'm so proud of him* and he works his ASS off. They're there on the weekends *both saturday and sunday* and they practice EVERY SINGLE EFFING DAY of the week. They're more coordinated and organized than most sports *and all our sports teams [including BAND] are the best in our state, or at least top 10* and they even have a class dedicated to working on it. I don't see football players working that hard. There are SO many kids in band, and all the ones that I know are definately IN SHAPE. Also, with so many kids, it's hard to coordinate that and it takes practice, you can't just walk around and make numbers/letters in line just by guessing. These coordinations are well-thought out and very well planned and even more practiced!!

Actually, calling band a SPORT would be lowering it...
