In 1223 St. Francis of Assisi began Nativity plays with songs. People would sing the songs aloud as and when it would appear in the play making them popular. 1410 too recorded Christmas carols being sung and new lyrics been written. But during the rule of Oliver Cromwell in England in 1647, all carol singing was abolished.
It was only in the 19th century that carol singing came back with full vigor as the vast majority of Catholics in England and America popularized it. Now it has become a tradition to sing carols every season and this tradition is passed down generations so that it lives forever.
