This tutorial will show you how to make a vivid picture look washed out.
Difficulty: Beginner

Open (Ctrl+O or File > Open) the picture you will use. I will be using this one of my baby cousin.




Next, unlock the layer.




Duplicate the layer (Layer > Duplicate Layer) and set the blending mode to Screen.




After changing the Blend Mode, you may have what looks like:




Next, press D to reset your colors to black and white, if they aren't already.
Now do Image > Adjustments > Gradient Map [Leave Dither and Reverse unchecked.]





Press OK, and this is what I got:



If the picture looks TOO washed out, you can change the opacity in the bottom right corner panel.

[Or use Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options and change opacity there]
