Tutorial: [Create a 3 px Border] by iEnigma
Wanna know how to make the border visible in the image above? It's actually quite simple.

1) First, let's open up the picture that we want to use. I'll take out a 50 x 50 pixel picture of Halo's Master Chief. Size doesn't matter, but this works well on square avatar images. Here's our starting image:

2) In the top toolbar, click on Edit --> Stroke. Make sure not to do the layer styles stroke. Enter the below settings. NOTE: Do not make a new layer. Do the strokes on the layer that has the graphic.

3) Make sure that your image looks like the one below. If not, undo the stroke and re-enter it.

4) Now, click Edit --> Fill again but change Width to 2 px and change the color to white (hex: FFFFFF). You should have an image that looks like this:

5) For the final step, click Edit --> Stroke one more time. Now change the width to 1 pixel and the color to black (hex: 000000). It should look like below:

Presto!You're done! This effect also looks great on signatures for web forums, too:

hmm.. i don't do it on photoshop. if i make an imagine and later want to add a border i just do it on paint using the line tool. it's just easy, but i guess since i never thought about looking into it on photoshop i will now.

You could do that too, but once you get mroe advanced, you won't ned Paint for anything anymore. The Adobe Creative Suite covers just about everything.

I just do stroke --> inside --> 3 px

Then flatten the image. And do the same thing except 2 px, and then flatten the image and same thing 1 px. But this is way simpler. Lol. Thanks.

You can make a new layer and flatten it at the end.

That would just take too long. You can just make a new layer for each and flatten it all together.
