This is probably really stupid but I can't get it to paste in the same layer. It keeps creating it's own new layer. ==;;

It is supposed to do that. Just forget the "paste in the same layer," it was probably a typo. Just keep going.

Go into your layers palette and drag the image you opened under the transparent image layer.

Learning the basics is a good idea before jumping into anything.
